Glen Ellyn, Ill – The goal for Glenbard West’s Katelynne Hart was to get in a fast 1,600-meter race on her home track like she has in the past. Last year, she ran a state all-time best in the 3,200. Earlier in the week, the conditions looked ripe for a fast time.

That changed on Friday when winds from the north kicked in. It was sunny Saturday morning, but there were winds whipping around the track gusting to 25 mph.

“I was looking at the weather at the beginning of the week and basing my workouts on that. Last year it was so perfect,” Hart said. “When I ran in it on Friday, I was like well? But then again, everybody has to run it.”

The wind that hit the runners on the first turn and buffered the runners on each of the straightaways did not seem to bother the seven-time state champion on her home track. All she did is go out and run the nation and state best time in the 1,600 of 4:45.33.

It did not seem like a race, more like a time trial as she won by 17 seconds ahead of Barrington’s Molly FitzPatrick who ran 5:02.93. (FitzPatrick ran 5:02.74 later that night at Distance Night in Palatine). Hart was racing against herself, racing against the clock like she normally did.

The pace was where she wanted it going through the first 400-meters in 68.5 and 800-meters in 2:19.1. She was still flying on the third lap as she ran 73.4 to get to 3:32.5. With the crowd on their feet as she came down the final straight, Hart finished with a 73.1 final lap.

What was forgotten on this day was that Hart ran two other races. She ran the anchor legs in both the 4x800 relay and 4x400 relay. She took the baton trailing Barrington by close to 13 seconds in the 4x800. It would be a tough task for Hart to catch the Lady Fillies as Alyssa Norris was running the anchor leg for them. (Norris ran 4:59.88 for 1600 meters later in the day at Distance Night in Palatine).

Hart went after the challenge running 64 seconds for the first lap and coming in with a 2:13.1 anchor split. Barrington won the race (9:30.76, IL #2) with Glenbard West at 9:38.27. Hart came back in the 4x400 running a 60.3 split in holding off Gabby Cossio and Barrington. Glenbard West won the race (4:04.76) ahead of Barrington who ran 4:07.53.

“Today I was happy on the way I went out in the 1600,” Hart added. “I went out too fast at Arcadia and that messed up a little with my race. Today I went out at the pace that I needed to go out in.”

The most dramatic moment of the meet came early in the day in the 3,200. Naperville North’s Maggie Gamboa defined the race opening up an eight second lead going past 1,600 meters in 5:26 with the pack of Katie Hohe of Glenbard West, Sophia McDonnell of Geneva, Megan Driscoll of Naperville North, and Sarah May of York seven seconds back. The pack thinned out in the next three laps as only Hohe and McDonnell stayed at that distance behind Gamboa.

Gamboa had a nine second lead at the bell lap. She made a strong surge in the lap before. The leading by herself in the wind was taking affect as she started to slow. Hohe took advantage of the opportunity and had closed the gap to five seconds with 200-meters left. Hohe took the lead with 60-meters left and went on to win (11:04.81) ahead of McDonnell (11:07.13) and Gamboa (11:07.84).

It was Hohe’s final individual race on the Glenbard West track.

“I knew it was going to be a competitive race. Especially with the winds, I knew I could stick behind someone and go at the end,” Hohe said. “She (Gamboa) made a little bit of a surge in the seventh lap and that had me a little concerned. I felt good to have something at the end. That last 150 meters I just gave it all that I had.”

Host Glenbard West used wins plus depth to take home the team title with 102 points. Lincoln-Way East followed (85 points) with Barrington placing third (68.5 points).

Glenbard West had three individual wins to help get them to the meet title. Audrey Altman completed the individual distance sweep for the Lady Hilltoppers. The freshman passed Naperville North’s Natalie Walsh in the final 40-meters to take home the win in the 800 Meter Run. Altman’s winning time of 2:17.58 placed her just ahead of Walsh by more than a second (2:18.99).

Lincoln-Way East had some strong performances as they gear up for a run at a state trophy. Mariam Azeez, a freshman, jumped a personal best of 18-7.75 (IL #7) to win the Long Jump ahead of Lake Zurich’s Isabelle Klett who jumped 18-1 (IL #10T).

It was a close 400 meters race between East’s Taylor Wright and Warren Township’s Janii Jenkins, two of the top 400-meter runners in the state. Wright got off strongly building up a lead in the first 200-meters of the race. Jenkins was starting to close the gap on Wright around the curve when Jenkins pulled up and crumpled down to the track with an injury. Wright went on to run 57.71 (IL #3) to win the race ahead of Lake Zurich’s Sydney Mark (59.27). Jenkins did not finish.

Wright also finished fifth in the 100 Meter Dash and ran 25.99 to finish second in the 200, just behind Whitney Young freshman Sydney Robinson (25.83).

There were two double individual winners in this meet. Halle Bieber of Naperville North fought the cross winds to run 15.72 to win the 100 Meter Hurdles ahead of Oak Park-River Forest’s Passion Worsham (16.04). Bieber pulled away from the pack in her section to run 44.72 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles with Gabby Cassio finishing second (45.55, IL #7) and Kate Sciarini of Lincoln-Way East running 46.13 to finish third.

Dior Nicholson of Hinsdale Central was a double winner in the weight events. Her winning mark of 40-0.75 in the shut put was more than four feet ahead of Geneva’s Hannah Borodin (35-8.25). Nicholson won by more than 13-feet in the discus as she threw 116-4.
